Minimalistic Metabolite‐Based Building Blocks for Supramolecular Functional Materials

Abstract Metabolites are the set of substances produced or utilized in biochemical process metabolism known to perform diverse physiological functions every living organism. As very simple molecules, metabolites can self‐assemble into functional materials for biomedical and nanotechnology applications. Simple amino acid‐based crystals exhibit interesting physicochemical properties piezoelectricity, fluorescence optical waveguiding. Combinations metal‐coordinated display catalytic mimicking natural enzymes chemical reactions environmental remediation. Furthermore, excessive accumulation spontaneously forms toxic assemblies implicated pathogenesis metabolic neurodegenerative diseases. Herein, we mainly review progress recent three years on assembly minimalistic metabolite‐based building blocks bionanomaterials their potential applications energy harvesting, waveguiding, enzymatic catalysis, biomedicine. We hope this promote understanding development metabolite meet requirements.
